About Me:

I have always loved the outdoors, from my days at summer camp in the Colorado Rockies to my days in Montana, and then back to California. My first vehicle was a 1959 International Travelall, in which I drove to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and then returned via the Baja in 1973, before the Baja road was built. In Montana, I had a Jeep Wagoneer that I used to hunt and fish around the Bozeman areas. Bought a 1999 D2 in 2002, and sold it in 2005 when I acquired the LR3. “Zoey” as she is called, has taken me on many adventures, through the Colorado Divide trails, Moab, and all over California. I’m a licensed Ham, K6JKB and a leader in Land Ops ARC, a unique offroad ham radio club. I am also a member of Cal4Wheel and have been a trail leader twice for their Death Valley Experience. I also do a lot of volunteer work as a ham radio operator for various ultramarathon races, as well as the Baker2Vegas Relay. Married to Linda since 1980. Slogan…”Every Day is a Good Day Surfing…Some are just better than others”.

Favorite Destinations:

The Colorado trails along the great divide are breathtaking and I have so many memories. In California, my favorite places are Coyote Flat and Monache Meadow in the Sierra, and I love the many trails around the Big Bear area as well. I love to study the history of the areas I explore in, and when I am leading a trail, you will probably hear me talking on the radio about local knowledge and history. I am amazed at the resilience of the pioneers who explored and ventured out to settle. Death Valley is one of those places that is awe inspiring on every trip. And my latest adventures have been in the Kofa Reserve in Arizona.

Why I love SCRC:

I always wanted a Land Rover and was inspired by the Camel Trophy and the early safari movies. The Club provides not only great kinship with other owners, but there is so much knowledge that can be tapped about our vehicles, offroad places, techniques, etc. Even when I don’t see people for months, we are instantly best friends when we see each other. As a long time member, I enjoy sharing what I have learned over the years. The trail never gets old…only me…LOL
